Ephesians 4:23-24

‘and be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh, untarnished mental and spiritual attitude], and put on the new self [the regenerated and renewed nature], created in God’s image, [godlike] in the righteousness and holiness of the truth [living in a way that expresses to God your gratitude for your salvation]. ‘

Many aren’t aware that we, as born-again believers, are commanded to renew our minds continually. God expects his children to have a fresh, unblemished, and transformed mind. We are expected to put on our new man in Christ Jesus with A renewed and regenerated nature. It is our reasonable service to express our gratitude to God for our salvation. Romans 12:1

What is the mind, and how can you define it? For starters, we must understand that the mind is spiritual, which means it’s appended to our spirit. However, the brain is physical, which means it’s appended to our physical body; they are two different things.

The mind is the element or complex of an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons. Merriam Webster

The intellectual or rational faculty in man; the understanding; the intellect; the power that conceives, judges, or reasons; the entire spiritual nature; the soul; — often in distinction from the body. Bible Hub Mind

Synonyms: Intellect, intelligence, intellectual capabilities, mental capacity, brains, brainpower, wits, power of reasoning, understanding, reasoning, judgment, sense, mentality, perception, imagination,

Battlefield of the Mind:

Our mind is the battlefield where Satan can work subtly, and he likes to plant thoughts and suggestions in our minds to cause humans to do his will. Like the serpent in the garden with EVE, he quickly influenced her to question God’s command (word).

  • Genesis 3:1 AMP‘Now the serpent was more crafty (subtle, skilled in deceit) than any living creature of the field which the Lord God had made. And the serpent (Satan) said to the woman, “Can it really be that God has said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” ‘

As it was in the garden of Eden, the same serpent is whispering to the minds of many, causing seeds of Doubt, denying the authority of God’s word. Satans goal is to confuse, blind, and control the minds to cause us to become arrested and unable to accomplish the will of God. His main goal is to stop our growth/maturity, which will cause us to be ineffective in the kingdom of God.Β

The Arrested Mind:

Arrested Defined: To apprehend, to take legal authority, seize, detain, to stop progress or process, bring to A standstill

Development Defined: The process of developing or being developed

An arrested mind has been brought to A standstill, which stops the individual from developing or growing into full maturity.

Hebrews 5:11-14

‘Concerning this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull and sluggish in [your spiritual] hearing and disinclined to listen. For though by this time you ought to be teachers [because of the time you have had to learn these truths], you actually need someone to teach you again the elementary principles of God’s word [from the beginning], and you have come to be continually in need of milk, not solid food. For everyone who lives on milk is [doctrinally inexperienced and] unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a spiritual infant. But solid food is for the [spiritually] mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.’

1 Corinthians 13:11

‘When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. ‘

An arrested mind can’t hear, and they are unwilling to listen, which makes them unteachable. In A previous teaching, I shared how those who are unteachable are also naΓ―ve/gullible. These people are ever learning, but they are never able to come to the recognition of Jesus. Re-cognition is the ability to retain knowledge/understanding of something or someone you’ve encountered.

God never intended for Christians to continually sit in church and not become productive in the body of Christ. Christianity is about A Body ministry; this means we’re to become perfected to DO the works of the ministry. As mentioned in the book of Hebrews, those who were around in the church should have been teachers. They were exposed to the truth for quite some time; instead, they were still in need of teachers to learn the basic foundational principles of God. These individuals were continually in need of milk because they were inexperienced in the doctrine of Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews called them spiritual infants.

Another form of arrested development is the inability to put away childish things. Apostle Paul understood when he was A child; he talked, thought, and reasoned like A child. Age does not mean maturity; we can grow physically and age outwardly but inwardly due to childhood trauma, rejection, or any wounds we begin to regress or stagnate because of internal immaturity.

A person arrested in their development will act like an adult one minute and A child the next minute; this person is double-minded; they have A schizophrenic mind.

  • James 1:8 AMPC’ [For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides].’

The Schizophrenic Mind:

Schizophrenia Defined: A long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.

A schizophrenic mind is A fragmented mind; it causes disturbances in the thought processes. As a result, the mind becomes impaired, making it hard to assemble data into logical, coherent ideas. Schizophrenia is also another term for double-mindedness; the phrase translated means “two minds.” A double-minded person is unstable and unable to be reliable because they are uncertain about everything; they cannot take A stand to represent God.

Elijah confronted this spirit at Mt. Caramel; after three and a half years, the prophet Elijah came again to see Ahab and end the drought (I Kings 18:1; James 5:17,18). After confronting Ahab, he sent for all the people of Israel to be gathered at Mount Carmel for a showdown, and he gave them this challenge:

  • 1 Kings 18:21 ‘Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people [of Israel] did not answer him [so much as] a word. ‘

As Elijah confronted the people, he asked them, why are you hesitating between two opinions (double-minded)? If you know the Lord is GOD, why not follow him? But if you indeed believe Baal is god, then follow him. Elijah’s command was straightforward; there is no need for anyone to be hesitant or uncertain if they know who they serve. Those who are double-minded are halt between opinions; as Elijah asked, how long will you halt? Brethren, it is time to make A stand!

  • James 4:8 AMP Come close to God [with a contrite heart], and He will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; and purify your [unfaithful] hearts, you double-minded [people].

Renewing Your Mind:

God admonishes us to be renewed (revived, regenerated, restored) in the spirit of our mind. He expects us to use our intellect; this is part of coming into full maturity. As we mature in Christ, we change, allowing us to use our total gifts and talents. God calls us to “reason” with him

  • Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be like wool. ‘

Reason: The power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgments by the process of logic. (Rationality, logic, logical thought, cognition)

As we meditate on the word of God, with continual prayers, praise, fellowship, and worship, we will begin to see our minds renewed. It is A process, but the results are eternal. Anything is worth an eternity with our Father. Although God calls us to rise higher in our thinking, he expects us to have an abstract mind. There is A big difference between an abstract & concrete mind.

Concrete Mind (Carnal)Abstract Mind (Mind of Christ)
Limited Thinkers are led by what they see (Five senses)Have the ability to think about things that aren’t physically in front of them (pure imagination, Faith)
Literal thinkers are unable to see past the object or situation in front of them. FaithlessCreative Thinkers can produce their creativity.
Due to the mind being concrete, their development is arrested.Analytical Thinkers can analyze people and concepts.
Concrete thinkers are socially impairedCritical Thinking skills
Animalistic mindAbility to reason well

In closing, I’d like to encourage everyone to continue seeking and loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37); as you draw near to God, he will draw near unto you. Finally, I want to close this teaching with A prayer for our minds.

Deliverance Prayer for the Mind:

Heavenly Father, thank you for this teaching. I understand that you’ve told us to reason with you. So, today, Father, I confess and repent of the sin of allowing my mind to come under the control of satan. I break agreement with every spirit of arrested development, mind control, schizophrenia, and rejection. God, I want to be renewed in the spirit of my mind; please help me transform my mind by meditating on your word as I continually seek you.

Father help me to be delivered from the mind of the flesh. Teach me how to put on the mind of the Holy Spirit, which is life and peace both now and forever. I pray that you will restore my fragmented mind; wherever it has been scattered, broken, or split, God restores my soul/mind. Lord, as I continue to seek you, I pray that you will give me A steadfast and peaceful mind that is committed and focused on you. Show me how to apply my mind to the knowledge of GOD so that I can KNOW you more. Finally, Father, I pray that you will help me to have A made-up mind. So that I can take A definitive stand about serving you, no longer double-minded, allow me to be fully persuaded about my relationship with you. Lord, let your peace stand guard over my mind. I thank you, Father, for receiving and answering this prayer. I give you praise both now and forever in Jesus’s name AMEN!

  • Isaiah 26:3 AMP You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on Youβ€”in both inclination and character], Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation].

I pray this teaching was enlightening to you; God bless and keep you all!
