Witchcraft is the exercise or invocation of alleged supernatural powers to control people or events; this typically involves sorcery or magic. It is an irresistible influence or fascination with something. Britannica.com

Witchcraft helps the spirit of this world influence, captivate, and allure people’s hearts. Its design is to keep hearts captivated and minds blinded from Jesus Christ, who is the glorious light of the gospel.

It is important to understand what witchcraft is and how prevalent it is in our society. We live in a culture deceived by witchcraft. As such, it’s very easy for people to be ensnared by this insidious power.

In this post, we will discuss the signs of witchcraft and its attacks, but most importantly, how to break the power of witchcraft off our minds.

Influencing Power:

Acts 8:9-12But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8

Witchcraft is a work of the flesh; it works with the spirit of this world. One of the goals is to cause people to turn away from the pathway of righteousness. In the story of Simon the Sorcerer, Simon used magic arts and spells to influence and captivate the hearts of the people of Samaria. He presented himself as a great one, which caused the people to heed him. Scripture informs us that Simon bewitched the people of Samaria with sorcery for a long time.

Examining the scripture in Acts chapter 8 further, we can understand how witchcraft blinds the mind. Let’s look at some works of witchcraft.

  • Magic is the power to “influence” events using supernatural forces. Magic causes bewitchment, amazement, mystification, and dazzlement.
  • Mystify” means perplexing, puzzling, confusing, confusing, and making obscure or mysterious.
  • Dazzled” means to blind a person, deprive of sight, amaze or overwhelm someone with impressive quality, and overpower or dim the vision with light.

Simon, the magician, was an agent of Satan. He used his witchcraft to blind people. Unfortunately, they were so impressed with his magical qualities that they lost the ability to see the error of his ways. The bewitching powers broke when they heard the truth about the kingdom of God and the authority of Jesus Christ.

Our minds are bewitched when we are led by the spirit of this world and influenced by the devil’s kingdom.

Mental Attacks!

Satan releases witchcraft upon our minds daily, and he speaks to our minds to try to cause confusion and attack our mental clarity. We read about this in 2 Corinthians 10:5

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

We are called to guard our hearts, which are also our minds, will, and emotions. In verse four of this chapter, we are advised that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal. Instead, our weapons are spiritual, demolishing strongholds. That’s why we must take every thought captive and bring it under the obedience of Jesus Christ. Satan always targets our minds, which are the primary battlefield.

When our mind is under attack, some things we experience are:

  • Confusion
  • Cunningness
  • Blindness
  • Weariness (tiredness)
  • Doubt/Unbelief
  • Discouragement
  • Fear (Paralyzes you, making you stop moving forward)
  • The desire to quit.

It is important to recognize these attacks and stand against them. Sometimes, we are caught up in our daily routine and suddenly feel despair, hopelessness, or the desire to quit. We must understand that this is a tactic of Satan to attack our minds and cause us to give up or remain stuck/delayed.

Jesus desires us to know the truth, which helps to set us free. We must possess our minds and fight against the enemy to combat against witchcraft.

The fleshy acts of Witchcraft: Galatians 5:19-21

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

We are to be led by the Spirit of God, which protects us from responding or operating in the flesh. Our fallen nature is open to not only witchcraft attacks but also operating in witchcraft. The enemy uses several ways to pull us into the flesh and cause us to operate in witchcraft. One crafty door is Pride! Pride is indeed a monster; through Pride, we will tend to try to defend ourselves. We must remember that God is our defense.

The enemy will use different doors to cause us to operate in Pride and witchcraft. I will list six key points. BE ON GUARD!

  1. Self-Exaltation/Gloating: Self-exaltation is vainglory; scripture warns us against such sin. When we exalt ourselves and gloat about our success, we are glorifying ourselves when, in fact, we should allow others to notice and praise our good works.
  1. Self-righteousness: Self-righteousness is what it sounds like. It seeks to be made righteous on the exterior, but dead men’s bones are in the inner man.
  1. Comparison: When we compare ourselves to one another, we are unwise. We are all made in the image of Jesus Christ which closes the door to comparison. Once comparison is in place, it opens the door to jealousy, envy, and every evil work.
  1. Inability to wait on God: When we decide to take matters into our own hands, this is a sure sign that we are open to not only operating in the flesh but also witchcraft. This can cause us to exalt our will over and above the will of God.
  1. Walking in perverted authority: Think of the story of Jezebel and Ahab. How she signed his name to accomplish her will is an example of stepping outside of her authority—a sure sign of witchcraft.
  1. Taking matters into our own hands: Vengeance is the Lord’s, and he will re-pay. We must align with God, and he will fight our battles. Remember, once we forget that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, we have already lost the war.

There are so many ways in our culture to get involved in witchcraft, either via tarot card readings, vision boards, candle magic, sex magick, etc. As I mentioned, we must guard against our adversary (Satan). If he can’t get us through the items named, he knows he only has to cause us to be led by our fleshly nature instead of God’s spirit.

How to Guard Against Witchcraft

  • Operating in the realm of faith, this helps against the enemy using the tactic of doubt/unbelief.
  • Stay in a place of prayer.
  • We must stop using earthly (soulish) wisdom. We must be led by the Spirit of God and ask God for his wisdom to manage our affairs.
  • Remember to cast down thoughts and imaginations; we must bring every thought captive to Jesus Christ.
  • Mediate on the word of God daily to combat the lies of Satan.

Jesus came to set us free from the bewitching power of witchcraft. He is a glorious and majestic heavenly light. He desires that we have the veil removed from our minds to regain our spiritual vision and be filled with His Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
