Did you know witchcraft often operates in ways far more subtle than the spellbinding drama we see in movies? It doesn’t always involve cauldrons or pointed hats. Instead, it can be in trendy practices. It also manifests in manipulative behaviors or seemingly innocent habits. Many unknowingly engage in these behaviors, unintentionally opening spiritual doors that invite control, deception, and chaos.

In my earlier articles, like Emotional Witchcraft and Guarding Your Mind, I explored witchcraft’s emotional and mental impact. Today, I want to explore how it occurs in our everyday lives. We must also understand what we need to do to guard ourselves spiritually.

What Is Subtle Witchcraft?

At its core, witchcraft is about control. It seeks to manipulate people and circumstances. The challenge with subtle witchcraft is that it disguises itself as harmless, making it harder to recognize.

5 Everyday Practices That Are Subtle Witchcraft

1. Manipulative Words: The Power of the Tongue

Do your words build others up—or are they tools of control? Passive-aggressive remarks, gossip, and insincere flattery are subtle ways people manipulate others. Scripture reminds us of the weight our words carry:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” (Proverbs 18:21)

2. Burning Sage and Crystals: The False Promise of “Energy Cleansing”

Using sage or crystals for “cleansing” or “energy balancing” may seem harmless, but these practices contradict biblical principles and undermine the sufficiency of Christ’s power for protection.

Burning sage, in particular, is subtle witchcraft, distorting true prayer, which the Bible describes as our incense to the Lord (Psalms 141:2, Exodus 40:27). In the Bible, prayer during incense offerings even led to angelic encounters (Luke 1:9-11) so what spirit are we invoking during these rituals? Furthermore, burning sage has ties to idolatry, like the worship of Baal (Jeremiah 11:13). Instead of relying on rituals. We are to trust in the name and blood of Jesus, which are more than enough to protect and cleanse us and our atmosphere.

3. Manifestation: The Illusion of Control Over Destiny

Manifestation encourages individuals to “speak” their desires into existence, often bypassing God’s will. While faith and hope are biblical, manifestation distorts the truth by placing personal desires above God’s authority. True faith involves surrender to God’s plan, not self-centered declarations.

4. Victim Mentality: Emotional Manipulation in Disguise

Individuals with a victim mentality believe they are always suffering and often refuse to take responsibility for their actions. Instead, they blame others for their problems.

This attitude, known as “woe is me” syndrome, involves exaggerating or fabricating victimhood. People do this for various reasons, such as justifying the mistreatment of others, manipulating situations, seeking attention, or avoiding responsibility. Those who frequently engage in this behavior are often labeled as “professional victims.”

5. Passive Aggressiveness: Toxic Communication

Passive aggression is a communication style in which negative feelings are expressed indirectly, often through subtle behaviors such as sarcasm, sulking, or procrastination. This behavior can be hurtful and damaging to relationships.

How to Guard Against Witchcraft in Daily Life

  1. Stay Rooted in Scripture: Spend time in God’s Word daily to align your thoughts and actions with His truth.
  2. Pray for Discernment: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas in your life where manipulation or control might exist.
  3. Repent of Rituals: Let go of practices like burning sage or using crystals and embrace a true relationship with Jesus Christ.
  4. Examine Your Motives: Before speaking or acting, reflect: Are you seeking God’s will or trying to control an outcome?

Closing Thoughts

Witchcraft, no matter how subtle, is about one thing: control. God wants to set us free from these influences. You can walk in true freedom and spiritual authority by surrendering to God’s will.

  1. amazing work, T! But it’s not just burning of sage. Burning candles and smoking is also invoking other spirits. People have to be careful. “My people perish for lack of knowledge.”
